niallon – Heart Of Gold

Neil Young. Of all the artists I’ve covered of my own volition, I really can’t make up my mind whether I love or hate him. Young, along with Bowie, U2, The Police and others were my introduction to real music over 20 years ago and as I have preached before, they all came via greatest hits albums. The ability to pick and choose from greatest hits albums brings problems, namely someone like me can go nearly their entire life before discovering Neil Young isn’t exclusively a country artist. I know, I am ashamed if that helps. It got me to thinking about how our musical tastes change over the years too as nowadays I gladly listen to the rock side of Neil Young whereas before it just wasn’t for me. It made me wonder about other music I had abandoned in the past and what it is like returning to old genres you thought you had left behind. Continue reading niallon – Heart Of Gold

niallon – I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You

First things first, I’d no post for “Will O’ The Wisp”, for shame. In my defence, I was in a field in Laois before I remembered and battery life was a precious commodity. Won’t happen again. Back to this week’s post and it’s another one from Tom Waits. I’ve preached and preached about “Martha” ad nauseam and how it was my gateway drug into Tom Waits, but it was arguably this song that first opened that door. Juliet Turner and Brian Kennedy performed a wonderful cover of this song years back which prompted by father to run out and buy a copy of Closing Time and that was when I first heard anything from him. Little did I know what other gems, and genres, I was about to discover however. Continue reading niallon – I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You

niallon – Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)

Somehow, I’ve never once made an attempt at covering this song previously, which is kind’ve shocking considering I spent my teenage years obsessed with it. Hell, I was even reminded over on the niallon Facebook page that it was one of the songs I performed for my Leaving Cert practical in school. Maybe it’s just because it’s been covered to death I subconsciously blocked it out. I do remember having a very specific jumping off point with this song though, and it all came down to interpretation. Continue reading niallon – Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)

niallon – Falling Slowly

Back when I was in school it seemed that everyone was a superfan of The Frames. Except me. That’s not really an uncommon anecdote in my music fandom, I have always tended to have a small set of artists/bands I like and I’m usually extremely slow to take to a new artist. I do feel I missed out with The Frames quite a bit though, and Glen Hansard in general is one of those artists where every time I hear his content, I tend to give it a thumbs up and say I should listen more. It’s hard work sometimes though. Continue reading niallon – Falling Slowly

niallon – Hotel California

I’m quite surprised it took so long for something from Eagles to crop up on the niallon channel if I’m being honest. Before starting to work on this cover, which led to me listening to their back catalogue quite a bit, I’d kind’ve forgot how much I like their music to be honest. A lot of that has to do with recent history. They were one of the first bands I ever saw live back in 2001, but I saw them a second time in 2009 and there was just no comparison in the gigs. Granted I think a lot of that had to do with 2001 being not long after their unlikely reunion, whereas 2009 saw them with a new album to tour but it got me to thinking – do the mediocre later years of an artist really take entirely from their past glories? Continue reading niallon – Hotel California

niallon – Martha

After a few weeks of “I wouldn’t be a major fan of band X, Y, Z”, this week is a total 180 to my all time favourite song. I’ve spoken plenty in the past about my Tom Waits obsession and how this song was really what kicked it all off, but I’ve never paid massive attention to that label – favourite. Continue reading niallon – Martha

niallon – Wish You Were Here

Time after time, the songs I put the least effort in to have a tendency to become some of the most popular on the YouTube page. Now that’s not to say that I didn’t put a lot of effort into this cover, but it was kind’ve a spur of the moment outtake at the end of a session yet it has received some great responses, so thank you all for that first and foremost!
