niallon – Kiss Me

It may come as a shock to…well, none of you, but I wasn’t much of a Dawson’s Creek fan growing up. I’ve also never seen She’s All That. Glad I could get that out of the way. That said, even though they are the two main reasons many people would be so familiar with this song, I can vividly recall it absolutely owning an entire summer, despite never reaching number one. How the hell does that happen?

niallon – Dance Monkey

Those who know me, and who have read these posts, know that I am absolutely awful at keeping up with current music. I’ve always held a belief that modern music stopped resonating with me around 2010, for the most part. Back then it wasn’t just with bands like Kings Of Leon and The Killers being in their pomp but it was also when the likes of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry rose to stardom with some absolutely cracking pop tunes. Now I know it is my duty as a grumpy old fart to say that music nowadays just ain’t like it used to be but I don’t think that’s entirely what’s going on here.  Continue reading niallon – Dance Monkey

niallon – If I Could Put My Life On Paper

Joe Dolan. In our house we couldn’t stand him. My mother is a massive Joe Dolan fan and for us as kids he was the joke, akin to Daniel O’Donnell or Cliff Richard. Adored by mothers but please for the love of God ma don’t put that tape on in the car. As happens with so many artists though, age has been kind to Joe’s career in my eyes but until now I’ve never really given proper thought to why. niallon – Monster Mashup 2

I’m another life I used to make short films. I’ve been a horror fan all my life and myself and a mate used to make short horror films and a few dramas to boot. I was never one of those kids you hear about that grew up to be Spielbergs and Scorceses who were making 8mm shorts in their childhood and always wanted to be a filmmaker but I have always loved the craft. niallon – North And South

First things first, I’ve missed a few posts. The original idea behind these companion blog posts was that I would talk a bit about the song being covered but I pretty quickly ran out of superlatives for all the songs and artists I was covering. I shifted over instead to using each given cover as an opportunity for me to discuss a related topic I’d had floating around my mind. In order to not diminish that concept, I held off on a few write ups like “Beautiful Day” and “Human” because I simply couldn’t naturally think up of a topic to write on. Ideally I would have weekly posts in conjunction with the YouTube uploads but to be honest I’d rather post when I’ve something decent to say rather then just for the hell of it. Like this week. niallon – Heart Of Gold

Neil Young. Of all the artists I’ve covered of my own volition, I really can’t make up my mind whether I love or hate him. Young, along with Bowie, U2, The Police and others were my introduction to real music over 20 years ago and as I have preached before, they all came via greatest hits albums. The ability to pick and choose from greatest hits albums brings problems, namely someone like me can go nearly their entire life before discovering Neil Young isn’t exclusively a country artist. I know, I am ashamed if that helps. It got me to thinking about how our musical tastes change over the years too as nowadays I gladly listen to the rock side of Neil Young whereas before it just wasn’t for me. It made me wonder about other music I had abandoned in the past and what it is like returning to old genres you thought you had left behind. Continue reading niallon – Heart Of Gold

niallon – Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)

Somehow, I’ve never once made an attempt at covering this song previously, which is kind’ve shocking considering I spent my teenage years obsessed with it. Hell, I was even reminded over on the niallon Facebook page that it was one of the songs I performed for my Leaving Cert practical in school. Maybe it’s just because it’s been covered to death I subconsciously blocked it out. I do remember having a very specific jumping off point with this song though, and it all came down to interpretation. Continue reading niallon – Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)
