niallon – Castaway

Taking a break from covers and requests for this week, we decided to dust off another of the originals. Castaway was one of the easiest songs to write out of any of my efforts…lyrically that is. The bulk of it all arrived in one go while I was sat idly by waiting to meet up with some friends, in those glorious days before we had so much to easily distract and whipping out a notepad was an acceptable way to pass the time. Originally, it was a very lively bouncy number and I was quite happy with it. As time went on though I felt it didn’t really fit the lyrical content, at least how I intended it. To me the song was about the desire to go and do the things in the song, rather than someone actually in the process of doing them. The endless debate about writer’s intention versus listener’s interpretation is one I frequently find myself in – do we seek the writer’s interpretation of the song or our own? Everyone is different, I usually can’t decide myself, but I wrote this with a specific intention while at the same time I love hearing different interpretations.

Whatever your interpretation might be I hope you enjoy it, and as always, watch, like, share, subscribe!

niallon – Tale As Old As Time

I feel like highlighting how long it has been since we uploaded is a little repetitive at this stage but, yeah, it’s been a while. The good news is that some backroom changes mean we should get far more consistent once more (basically, I’ve learned how to record myself) and we do have a very big project on the way soon that we’ve been working on for months now. But that is all down the road, right now we’ve got this.

I’m not gonna claim to be the world’s greatest Disney fan. I do like the majority of their output but I tend to be one and done, rarely re-watching their stuff. I do however regularly share the company of some Disney diehards and this particular tune seems to be one of the constants as far as favourites are concerned. We had been toying with covering a Disney track for a while and this one became a no-brainer (though there will likely be more Disney covers down the line). One final note I would like to add….this song is deceptively tricky! I won’t say exactly how long but suffice to say this vid is a long time in the making and I hope you’re pleased with the results, especially those aforementioned diehards, you know who you are! If you are, watch, like, share, subscribe!

Live In Concert – U2, Croke Park, 2005 (Night 1)

20141014_002741Last week’s Live In Concert

I can never fully get my head around my fondness for U2. I’ll usually be first in line for some Bono bashing and their more recent output, namely No Line On The Horizon, left me a little cold. Yet they are and always will be one of my favourite bands, their music making itself heard in some huge moments in my life and at the end of it all I have immense pride that such a power house of a band came from this little island. Maybe my confusion towards them is just good old Irish begrudgery. Whatever it is, in 2005 they were the force to be reckoned with, and they showed it in their hometown over three nights in Croke Park.

The Inbetweeners 2 Review

inbetweeners-2

Judgement and critique isn’t something you can exactly direct towards the Inbetweeners franchise. For starters, it has absolutely no shame whatsoever. Ninety percent of the humour in it comes from taking the envelope and just flinging it off a cliff. The second main reason is that, it’s funny. And that’s all it has ever claimed to be. And with this latest movie, that tradition is still alive, albeit with less strength than the first installment. Continue reading The Inbetweeners 2 Review

Live In Concert – Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slane Castle, 2003

This one stings a little. Eleven years ago, I attended one of the greatest gigs I ever have. In the ensuing years everytime I’ve seen this band they’ve taken a further dip in quality, yet for now I’m still able to cling to that one amazing evening all those years ago, just. To me, the Chilis never made it past the departure of John Frusciante and the years leading up to his departure didn’t help their live show. Phoenix Park 04, Oxegen 06, Croke Park 12. A series of diminishing returns compounded by a terrible last album. But anyway, I digress for the millionth time. Continue reading Live In Concert – Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slane Castle, 2003

Gone Fishin’ – Where It All Started

image

As long as I can remember, my father has had myself and my brother fishing. His father did the same for him and his brothers, I will do the same should I have children. It has its detractors, sure. Hurting fish, pointless past time, play golf. I’ve heard it all. All I can say is that I’m always conscious of the well being of fish, I rarely if ever keep what I catch and the prolificatiin of our fish population in Ireland is of paramount importance to me so that future generations may enjoy the same endorphin rush as I do.

Live In Concert – Luka Bloom, The Helix, 2005

I’ll admit I felt like a bit of an outsider at this gig. Luka Bloom was filming a live DVD in The Space at The Helix, an intimate venue for a mere 100 lucky attendees. Why was I feeling outcast? Well, it was my first time seeing him live in full. I had seen him play support to his brother, Christy Moore, in the Kaedeen in Newbridge but this was the first time I was seeing him in full. And here I was surrounded by his most enthusiastic fans!
