If you are a major DC comics fan, liked this film, or haven’t in fact seen it yet, stop reading now. There will be spoilers, there will be rants and there will be very little nice things said about it. Believe the critics people, they’re nearly unanimously right this time; BvS is pretty bad – or at least it does a lot of things badly – and I’ll do my best to explain that vague sentence a little better below.
And we’re back! Flicks On ‘Flix has returned and I’m kickstarting this new “season” with a film I cannot believe I haven’t covered yet – Open Range. Directed by and starring Kevin Costner, accompanied by Robert Duvall, Michael Gambon and Annette Benning; this is the film for this of you like me who grew up in an age where Kevin Costner was box office gold, where The Postman was one of the biggest WTF moments of your young life and you wondered would he ever regain his status. Oh yes, he did.

No, we’re not moving over to Fridays. This week’s Flicks On ‘Flix has been delayed because it is an extra special one. At least it is to me. This week we’re looking at Community. Beloved by few, if Nielsen Ratings are to be believed, Community has become a cult hit since it began six years ago, taking the tropes of other TV shows and movies and spinning some hilarious meta humour at them. Its career is a storied one and it looks for all intents and purposes that it has finally come to a rest with this most recent sixth season. Season 1 – 5 are available on Netflix and there is no better time than now to binge and take in the wonderful nugget of comedy that was Community.

Maybe it’s just me, but there was a time where it felt like this film lived on RTE. Or maybe I just gave up on trying to find things to watch and repeatedly popped in our VHS copy. Either way, we’re onto an absolute childhood favourite of mine here and one which I probably shouldn’t have even been watching as a child (like most of them!) You won’t find me recommending many Irish films outside of a certain holy collection I swear by that I will write about another time. I avoided this film for a long time due to severely low expectations at the thought of it being just another let down of an Irish film and I found myself delighted to be proven wrong and thoroughly delighted that I had watched one of the finest horror comedies I have ever seen, within Ireland or not.

Ok, not a flick. This week Flicks On Flix is going small screen with a criminally underwatched and unfortunately cancelled after one season show, The River. Brought to you by Steven Spielberg and Oren Peli (he who gave us Paranormal Activity), The River was a brilliantly made throwback to The Outer Limits and Twilight Zone sensibilities that just never found an audience. Few actors cause such excessive eye rolling as Rob Schneider. I’ll begin by saying that I don’t plan to defend the man’s many career missteps at all in this piece but I will implore and hopefully convince you to give this, his directorial debut, a shot and I’m confident you’ll thank me later.
