Don’t ignore the quotation marks; I for one don’t think this season of True Detective needed saving. Sure, it was nowhere near the first as regards quality but that’s always going to be the case said first season turns out to be an absolute tour de force that threatens to shake up the very mold of anthology television. There’s another core issue with Season 2 – audiences were blown away by the performance of Matthew McConaughey in particular and his partnership with Woody Harrelson was just a privilege to watch. Creator Nic Pizzolatto had a huge hill to climb then and that he even had the balls to go for a follow up season was an achievement. Full spoilers for Game Of Thrones and Hannibal below.
What a week in TV land it has been. Hannibal is back and brilliant as ever, but Game Of Thrones hit the now famous nine episode mark in its current season. Did it deliver? Was there a wedding? Is Stannis still the Mannis? Well…
Have you been unhappy with Season 5 thus far? I know I’ve had more complaints than I did for any of the previous seasons, none major but still more than this series usually warrants. Luckily this week, ahead of next week’s episode 9 and all the delectable TV that should entail, we were treated to one of the best GoT episodes of the series so far. Game Of Thrones S05E06 – “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken”
When a show begins with a pilot episode featuring a young child falling, seemingly to his death, you expect a great deal of taboo. When said show can still shock you five years later you can do nothing but commend it. Yet, Continue reading The Goggle Box – Too Far?
Dragons! Winter! Theon! Ramsay! This week saw Game Of Thrones get a little closer to the territory this all started in. Damn it’s good to have Winterfell back, didn’t even know I’d missed it! That said its a little sad that a Tyrion and King’s Landing-lite episode is one of the best of the season so far but hey, characters have to move on and change. Game Of Thrones S05 E04 – “Sons Of The Harpy”
As someone who binged Seasons 1 – 3 of GoT I won’t profess to have the most patient mind when it comes to watching episodes week on week. I also have a bit of a mental block when it comes to the fantasy genre, this being my main exception due to the more grounded elements of the show thematically. All of that said, I have found Season 5 to date a little slow and bordering on boring. That is until “Sons Of The Harpy”. I hate to be that viewer who is only watching in anticipation of the next big wow factor moment but the finale of this week’s episode, along with some meaty moments preceding it, served for some great television and it now feels like Season 5 has kicked off in earnest. Game Of Thrones S05E03 – “High Sparrow”
Ok, I’m not getting… Bored, per se. This is TV at its finest and I wouldn’t dream go about hating on GoT, but parts are starting to drag and I think I know why if you asked me at any point during Seasons 1-3 I would have told you how little I give a crap about Bran Stark and his three eyed raven mission. The decision was then taken that Bran, Hodor and company would be omitted from Season 5 entirely Continue reading The Goggle Box – The North Remembers
