A ringing phone must be answered. A conceit put forward most famously in Joel Schumacher’s Phone Booth but one that is as old as Alexander Graham Bell really. It is also at the heart of this eighties gem, Miracle Mile. Anthony Edwards stars as Harry, just a man living his life in L.A, falling in love with a girl named Julie and discovering the world is ending in seventy minutes. Yes, upon answering a ringing payphone Harry is informed by someone claiming to be a soldier that the clock has begun to tick and nuclear war will break out in seventy minutes.

Better Call Saul S01E09 – “Pimento“
I hate it when the internet is right. As mentioned last week, there is a hypothesis bouncing around that BCS can’t possibly have too much in the line of happy moments for Jimmy seeing as he has to be forced into becoming Saul Goodman come the end of the series, so the leather bound books and rich mahogany desk are not likely to be coming his way anytime soon. That his downfall would come at the hands of his brother Chuck though, woah. By last week it seemed Continue reading The Goggle Box – Saul’s Not Good, Man

Better Call Saul S01E07 – “Bingo”
It can’t be said that BCS has stuttered with this week’s seventh episode but it is more than accurate to say that this was the quiet beginnings of the path to Saul. Jimmy was so close, ready to move out of the salon and into a swanky office of his own, which he was hoping wouldn’t hurt his chances with Kim too of course. This is likely the last time we will see Jimmy get this close to real, legit success and it was handled in a surprisingly tragic manner. With Jimmy’s quiet moment in the final scene of the episode we saw a similar “lowest ebb” from him as we did from Mike last week. With both characters reaching their lowest, may we get nothing but climbs from now on? Climbs that find them both settle comfortably in the middle tier of course. Better Call Saul S01E06 – “Five-O”
Better Call Saul take a bow. This week we were taken on a journey through Mike’s back story preceeding his arrival in New Mexico and sure enough a Jonathan Banks feature episode did anything but disappoint.

Another week, another double bill of great TV. We really are spoiled for quality entertainment on the small screen the last decade, the lingering question is when, or if, it will all run out of steam. Whilst the risk of that has heightened with seemingly every television network now producing their own “contenders” to the juggernauts, we should be set for at least a few more years of top notch TV and this week in Better Call Saul and The Walking Dead served to reinforce that. Also, in case anyone is wondering, yes there will be a season review of House Of Cards coming up in the next few weeks but I’m trying to pace it out!

Better Call Saul S01E04 – “Hero”
Four episodes in and yes, Better Call Saul is a damn fine TV show. Already it is clear that the twists and turns are just going to keep coming and escalating and the story of the rise of Saul Goodman is merely beginning. Bob Odenkirk is absolutely nailing it right now too, going above and beyond his previous portrayal of the character and he hasn’t even hit the highest highs of absurdity yet. Continue reading The Goggle Box – Yep, It’s Addictive

Better Call Saul S01E03 – “Nacho”
In only 3 episodes Better Call Saul has completely set itself out on its own while simultaneously containing the same highly intelligent writing and humour that made Breaking Bad such a great show. It is telling that after this week I may even be ready to stop referencing BB within the first paragraph of these reviews, such is the strength of BCS on its own.
