Full spoilers for Better Call Saul Season 1 below
Better Call Saul S01E10 – Marco
It was never going to be a foot race to the finish line; Jimmy wasn’t going to magically throw on a purple suit and become Saul Goodman in the closing scenes of this closing episode. I’m not going to pretend I’m one of those people who was aware of this from the offset and so I can sympathise with some who found themselves underwhelmed by Marco. It’s maybe a little poetic that Breaking Bad was cut short by two episodes thanks to the writer’s strike and now Better Call Saul in its freshman season seems to have finished on a comma.
Honestly, I don’t know how I feel about the closing scene of this episode. Like I said, Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould were never going to have the Saul transformation be complete by the end of the first series and then spend the next four or five years showing us the various hilarious cases Saul took on pre-Heisenberg yet that last moment between Jimmy and Mike seemed both perfect and wrong all at once. It let us know as viewers that this was indeed the definition of a pilot season, an origin story if you will, but a small part of it was “See? See? This, this is where he decided to become Saul!”. It just bordered on a level of bluntness that this writing stable has always kept away from.
Let’s do a quick about face here though because things are getting negative and they shouldn’t be. This was the best first season of television ever seen from any show. Sure it had the advantage of being spun off from a small screen phenomenon but there was anything but a guarantee that this would work. Since watching Marco I’ve been debating whether or not BCS is intrinsically and solidly a prequel show that couldn’t work in any other way. There’s obvious reasons why this series would fall flat if this were the first time we were being introduced to this universe and these characters but realistically, with few tweaks, this could be and is its own show. That is the measure by which it will now be judged as we await Season 2 and pray to not get a sophomore slump. As if that were even possible.
Better Call Saul Season 1 is now available on Netflix in its entirety.
Just some quick news for The Goggle Box, the list ahead for coverage looks something like this:
Daredevil will be available in full on Netflix April 10th.
Game Of Thrones Season 5 premieres Monday April 13th on Sky Atlantic.
Community Season 6 reviews will start next week with Episode 6 (because somebody didn’t realise it has been airing on Sony, my bad).
Also looking a little further down the line, The Walking Dead spin off Fear The Walking Dead will premiere this summer, as will Season 3 of the delectable Hannibal. Also keep an eye out for some full season reviews of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Marvel : Agents Of Shield, Peaky Blinders, Constantine, Supernatural and more as we play summer catch up.
