The Walking Dead Season 6 Finale Review

Oh yes, he’s back. I kinda gave up on TV reviews a little, mainly because I was unable to keep current with episodes as they aired, but The Walking Dead has always had an exception made in that field. Mostly this is because I am still an avid reader of the comic series and I regularly watch it every week with one of my friends who is not so aside from the show, I get a great joy out of watching her reactions to moments from the comic as they unfold and indeed getting caught out myself as the show “remixes” some key moments. It doesn’t hurt either that since Scott Gimple took over as showrunner on Season 4, the quality has been escalating consistently. That is, until, the last two or three episodes of Season 6. Or is it? It’s a really weird one being honest because in the 16 hours or so since I watched the finale my opinion on it has been bouncing back and forth and online I can mostly only see opinions coming in from fellow comic readers. So I’m deathly curious, show only watchers, what did you think of it? I make that statement now because I want to clarify, I may say some slightly mean things about the finale (as well as many SPOILERS too!) and I want it to be known that I’m mostly saying these things as someone who knows what’s coming next. Take that as you will but it is, in my opinion, an important factor to keep in mind. Let’s get started.

The Goggle Box – Was True Detective “Saved” At The Death?

Full spoilers for True Detective Season 2 below

Don’t ignore the quotation marks; I for one don’t think this season of True Detective needed saving. Sure, it was nowhere near the first as regards quality but that’s always going to be the case said first season turns out to be an absolute tour de force that threatens to shake up the very mold of anthology television. There’s another core issue with Season 2 – audiences were blown away by the performance of Matthew McConaughey in particular and his partnership with Woody Harrelson was just a privilege to watch. Creator Nic Pizzolatto had a huge hill to climb then and that he even had the balls to go for a follow up season was an achievement. What a week in TV land it has been. Hannibal is back and brilliant as ever, but Game Of Thrones hit the now famous nine episode mark in its current season. Did it deliver? Was there a wedding? Is Stannis still the Mannis? Well…

Have you been unhappy with Season 5 thus far? I know I’ve had more complaints than I did for any of the previous seasons, none major but still more than this series usually warrants. Luckily this week, ahead of next week’s episode 9 and all the delectable TV that should entail, we were treated to one of the best GoT episodes of the series so far.

Game Of Thrones S05E06 – “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken”

When a show begins with a pilot episode featuring a young child falling, seemingly to his death, you expect a great deal of taboo. When said show can still shock you five years later you can do nothing but commend it. Yet,

Game Of Thrones S05E05 – Kill The Boy

Dragons! Winter! Theon! Ramsay! This week saw Game Of Thrones get a little closer to the territory this all started in. Damn it’s good to have Winterfell back, didn’t even know I’d missed it! That said its a little sad that a Tyrion and King’s Landing-lite episode is one of the best of the season so far but hey, characters have to move on and change. Game Of Thrones S05 E04 – “Sons Of The Harpy”

As someone who binged Seasons 1 – 3 of GoT I won’t profess to have the most patient mind when it comes to watching episodes week on week. I also have a bit of a mental block when it comes to the fantasy genre, this being my main exception due to the more grounded elements of the show thematically. All of that said, I have found Season 5 to date a little slow and bordering on boring. That is until “Sons Of The Harpy”. I hate to be that viewer who is only watching in anticipation of the next big wow factor moment but the finale of this week’s episode, along with some meaty moments preceding it, served for some great television and it now feels like Season 5 has kicked off in earnest.
