The Thin White Duke has passed on to his great reward at 69, and I don’t even know where to start. With the passing of Robin Williams two years ago I reached a realisation that is today becoming more and more concrete – this is what getting older is, and my heroes and idols from my childhood are beginning to succumb to the grasp of mortality. I’ve had many a heated debate over what can be deemed an “appropriate” level of response from Joe Bloggs to the passing of a celebrity and the rules for myself haven’t changed in this regard, I can’t think of a single other thing to do right now but type, so that’s what I’ll do. A little over a year ago, March 2014 to be exact, I kicked off I’m Talkin’ Here in earnest. I had reserved the WordPress space for a few years on account of my contributions to the now defunct Irish News Review. I had no idea what blogging really was and, stick with me here, I still don’t. Part of my reason for conjuring up this post is to try put some context on what the hell I’m Talkin’ Here actually is and what it is I aim to achieve with it. Basically, I love the sound of my own voice. Let me try make that seem a little less arrogant; I’m an opinionated little s**t. I got out of college in 2011 with a degree in English & Philosophy and not much of a clue what to do with it. Still don’t. Pretty quickly though I found myself contributing pieces to the aforementioned Irish News Review and maybe had sights set on the world of online journalism. This in turn drew me to WordPress and – having nearly blacked out my old Geocities and ProBoards days – I was suddenly back in the online content creation world. Not planned, expected or desired but I seem to have taken the summer off…by accident. No need to fret, I’m Talkin’ Here is back and with the Rugby World Cup around the corner it’s gonna be pretty busy around here. So what better time to launch a new weekly (yes, weekly I swear) segment than now. It has been suggested to me that at times I can be a little too on the defensive when it comes to some articles here (Me? Defensive? Never, I’m never defensive) and so In Defence Of will be the place where I take those interests (sports, music, games, books etc.) that I have that seem to be the most polarising amongst my peers, and at least attempt to put across my arguments for why people might do well to give out some second chances. What better place to start then than the musical Marmite that is U2. Continue reading In Defence Of – U2
For years, Ireland has been renowned for giving touring artists a unique live experience. You need only look at the amount of artists who have chosen Irish shows for their live releases for proof – Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bruce Springsteen, REM, David Bowie and more have all decided on their Irish dates as the ones most worthy of release. This reputation still holds today, but it is in danger of disappearing.
Holy crap you actually did it. In the final moments of voting on Friday, it was easy to let the fear kick in. Fear that logic, rational thought and common sense might not win out. Fear that the clock would be wound back on Ireland’s progress to acceptance. Waking up on Saturday morning to the early news that the ammendment looked set to pass, it was hard not to feel a little overwhelmed. Continue reading Take A Look At A New Ireland
The referendum debate has reached boiling point, RTE are having conniption fits over microscopic badges, registration staff are wearing away fingerprints opening letters and in general we’ve all gone a little mad. Time for some… Ahem… Normality: Continue reading Friday Full House 15/05/15
TGIF indeed, and what a wonderful warm front rolling in to make the most of the weekend. Yeah, I can’t be telling the truth all the time. What I can do however is tell you what you may have missed this week on I’m Talkin’ Here:
